3/5/2023 0 Comments Iconographer classI began to understand that while I was involved with writing an icon that week – the one on the table in front of me, God was also writing an icon – me….The most moving day for me was when I began to colour in the eyes of Mary. Great emphasis was placed on the fact that this was a personal journey into a sacred space where we would encounter the Divine and ourselves. “Looking back at it all from the distance of one week, I can see how a pattern of change set in early on. Perhaps on this feast it would be good to remember in prayer Christians who are being persecuted and martyred for the faith in our own time, they too are our beloved sisters and brothers.Īs we prepare to send out registration forms for this year’s course at Ards Friary (14th – 21st August), our first in three years, it has been interesting to look back at some of the feedback from participants at previous Ards iconography courses. However what finally unites these two saints on this feast day is that they were both martyred in Rome, Peter by crucifixion in 64 AD and Paul by beheading in 67 AD. St Peter here clearly identifies the writings of St. “There are some things in them (the writings of St Paul) hard to understand, which the ignorant and unstable twist to their own destruction, as they do the other scriptures.” (2 Peter 3: 16) Peter not only regards Paul as a “beloved brother”, but his respect for his writings is made clear: So also our beloved brother Paul wrote to you according to the wisdom given to him.” (2 Peter 3: 15) “Regard the patience of Our Lord as salvation. We can return to Scripture to find that the iconographic record is strongly warranted. In many icons, the two saints are prominent by their proximity, for example the icons of the Communion of the Apostles, the Ascension, Pentecost and the Dormition of the Virgin. Yet the iconographic record tells a different story. The teaching of the See of St Peter was being challenged by Martin Luther whose writings are heavily influenced by his close study of the writings of St Paul. In later history this seeming rivalry became wrapped up in the Reformation disputes over salvation by works as opposed to salvation by faith. These verses mark the struggle of the early Church to come to terms with the spread of the belief in Jesus among the uncircumcised Gentiles and whether they should have to adhere to the Jewish Law. But after they came, he drew back and kept himself separate for fear of the circumcision faction.” ” But when Cephas came to Antioch, I opposed him to his face, because he stood self-condemned for until certain people came from James, he used to eat with the Gentiles. The scriptural source can be found in Galatians 2:11 – 12: Certainly there is, both in scripture and in later church history, some reason to suggest a division between them, even a rivalry. It may seem strange to yoke these two saints together on the same feast day.
